If I was just going for all time favourite, it'd be Northanger Abbey; however, as Jane Austen isn't everyone's cup of tea, I'd have to say:
The Princess Bride, by William Goldman.
It has a little bit of everything (romance, adventure, humour, social commentary, good versus evil, magic, miracles, revenge, pirates, unusual creatures), and is probably the most quoteable piece of literature ever.
